In Juntura, you’ll stay at the Oasis Motel/Cafe, Lodging is provided by us but you will need to bring or buy your own food. The rooms are a bit dated but well kept and functional. They are pet friendly and accustomed to hosting bird hunters. The cafe offers great food with a wide selection for breakfast, lunch, and dinner—and they’re known for generous portions of fries. There is a mini fridge and microwave in each room.

Using a dog can be very helpful for retrieving downed birds and is especially useful for sage-grouse hunting. However, finding and hunting birds without a dog is still quite manageable.

Season details:
  • Sage-grouse season is short—9 days in early to mid-September—and does not overlap with other seasons.
  • Chukar and quail seasons run from mid October through January.
  • Duck hunting is steady throughout the season with peak success during migration.

Extremely cold weather can freeze much of the water, concentrating birds in small pockets along rivers, offering excellent hunting opportunities.

We monitor conditions closely to ensure you hunt where the birds are, whether it’s hot and dry or snow-covered and cold.

1. juntura, or

THREE LOCATIONS

John Day offers all the services you’ll need for a comfortable stay.

 The John Day Valley is known for some of the best turkey hunting in the state.

While turkeys are not native to Oregon, they have become well established. Hunters can harvest up to three turkeys per season.

Turkey hunting seasons and tips:
  • Best hunting is typically early in the season, from April 15 to May 15.

  • The later season, May 16 to 31, can still offer good hunting, but turkeys tend to be less vocal and more spread out during this time.

2. john day, or

Your hunt begins in Burns, where comfort meets opportunity. Just outside of town, we lead you into proven elk country—areas we’ve scouted thoroughly throughout the summer. From glassing ridges at first light to covering miles of timber and checking a network of trail cameras, we work hard to pattern elk movement long before you arrive.

Archery elk hunting is never easy, but being in the right location gives you a major advantage. Our pre-scouted setups and on-the-ground knowledge help put you in front of elk, increasing your odds of close-range encounters and unforgettable moments in the field. With Burns as your base and our preparation behind you, you’ll step into the hunt with confidence.
